Description: The World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA) is a joint product of UNEP and IUCN, managed by UNEP-WCMC, working with governments and other data providers. The database stores information on the global distribution of terrestrial, inland water and marine protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). The WDPCA combines the formerly separate World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and World Database on Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (WD-OECM). The database contains data on protected areas and OECMs designated at the national level and under regional and international conventions and agreements, in addition to those recognised through other means. The WDPCA adopts the definitions of a protected area used by IUCN and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the definition of an OECM adopted by Parties to the CBD. A User Manual (UNEP-WCMC 2026) is provided with the dataset. This includes a description of the attribute table and guide to interpreting its fields. The WDPCA can be viewed at, and downloaded from, Protected Planet (https://www.protectedplanet.net/) or from IBAT for commercial purposes (https://www.ibat-alliance.org/). A new version is published each month. The latest version is available from https://www.protectedplanet.net/.
