Service Description: Soil and sediment
depletion in this analysis is defined as reductions in both the quantity and
quality of soils, including losses of soil carbon stocks, which in turn impact
ecosystem services such as sediment retention, biomass production and climate
regulation. To capture these pressures, the assessment incorporated a total of
15 different spatial data layers, covering the period from 2001–2020,
representing various aspects of soil and sediment condition across the region. These
include:
- Erosion by tillage, water and wind.
- Elements such as arsenic, zinc,
cadmium, copper and mercury in excess of average or background levels normally
occurring in soils.
- Deficiency and excess of phosphorus.
- Excess of nitrogen.
- Change in soil organic carbon.
- Threats to soil biology.
- Packing density
(a proxy for susceptibility to soil compaction).

guidance documentation here for more information on the methodology, intended use cases and limitations.
