This dataset, compiled from various sources at UNEP-WCMC, shows the current extent of global forest cover. It is divided into needle-leaf forest (NF), non-forest (NON), temperate, broadleaf and mixed forest (TBMF), tropical dry forest (TDF) and tropical moist forest (TMF). This general dataset of global forest cover was produced from a series of regional datasets containing more detailed information of the forest cover. This dataset can be used with the dataset showing original forest cover to identify broad change.
<purpose>About half of the forest that was present under modern (i.e. post-Pleistocene) climatic conditions, and before the spread of human influence, has disappeared, largely through the impact of man's activities. The spread of agriculture and animal husbandry, the harvesting of forests for timber and fuel, and the expansion of populated areas have all taken their toll on forests. The causes and timing of forest loss differ between regions and forest types, as do the current trends in change in forest cover. This dataset has been produced from a variety of sources to be used in comparison with the dataset showing original forest cover allowing change over time to be identified.</purpose>

<logic>The map of Current Forest Cover (CFC) was made up of a number of different data sources, some national, others regional or global. National sources were considered generally more accurate than the regional or global datasets and so where they existed they took priority. Exceptions to this were where the national sources were obviously very much older or of lower resolution and accuracy than the regional or global sources. For some countries a combination of datasets was used, the most accurate parts of each taking priority. Most datasets were from 1990s data sources, a few were from the 1980s. </logic>
<complete>A wide range of sources at various scales have been incorporated. A crucial aspect of the collation of this dataset is ensuring that the dataset is of the highest possible scientific quality through the involvement of the key experts worldwide. This dataset is assumed to be complete at the time of publication.</complete>

<measDesc>The map of Current Forest Cover (CFC) was made up of a number of different data sources, some national, others regional or global. </measDesc>

<measDesc>A wide range of sources at various scales have been incorporated. A crucial aspect of the collation of this dataset is ensuring that the dataset is of the highest possible scientific quality through the involvement of the key experts worldwide. This dataset is assumed to be complete at the time of publication.</measDesc>
